(Sri Aurobindo speaks of four great Aspects of the Mother, four of
her leading Powers and Personalities, viz. Maheshwari, Mahakali,
Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati. We give his statement on Mahal-
akshmi in the following five pages. -ed.)

Wisdom and Force are not the only manifestations of the
supreme Mother; there is a subtler mystery of her nature and
without it Wisdom and Force would be incomplete things
and without it perfection would not be perfect. Above
them is the miracle of eternal beauty, an unseizable secret
of divine harmonies, the compelling magic of an irresist-
ible universal charm and attraction that draws and holds
things and forces and beings together and obliges them
to meet and unite that a hidden Ananda may play from be-
hind the veil and make of them its rhythms and its figures.
This is the power of MAHALAKSHMI and there is no aspect
of the Divine Shakti more attractive to the heart of em-
bodied beings. Maheshwari can appear too calm and great
and distant for the littleness of earthly nature to approach
or contain her, Mahakali too swift and formidable for its
weakness to bear; but all turn with joy and longing to
        Mahalakshmi.

light from the sun and wherever she fixes her wonderful gaze
or lets fall the loveliness of her smile, the soul is seized and
made captive and plunged into the depths of an unfathomable
bliss. Magnetic is the touch of her hands and their occult and
delicate influence refines mind and life and body and where she
presses her feet course miraculous streams of an entrancing
        Ananda.

                                    III

And yet it is not easy to meet the demand of this enchant-
ing Power or to keep her presence. Harmony and beauty of
the mind and soul, harmony and beauty of the thoughts and
feelings, harmony and beauty in every outward act and move-
ment, harmony and beauty of the life and surroundings, this
is the demand of Mahalakshmi. Where there is affinity to the
rhythms of the secret world-bliss and response to the call of
the All-Beautiful and concord and unity and the glad flow of
many lives turned towards the Divine, in that atmosphere she
        consents to abide.

Where love and beauty are not or are reluctant to be born, she

her face, she waits for this bitter and poisonous devil’s stuff to
be rejected and disappear before she will found anew her happy
influence. Ascetic bareness and harshness are not pleasing to
her nor the suppression of the heart’s deeper emotions and the

In everything, everywhere, in all relations truth must be brought
out in its all-embracing rhythm and every movement of life
should be an expression of beauty and harmony.
... a living harmony and beauty ... must be expressed in all
the movements of existence. This manifestation of beauty and
harmony is part of the Divine realisation upon earth, perhaps
        even its greatest part.
For, from the supramental point of view beauty and har-
mony are as important as any other expression of the Divine.
But they should not be isolated, set up apart from all other rela-
tions, taken out from the ensemble; they should be one with
the expression of life as a whole.
                                                         CWM 3: 109

In the physical world, of all things it is beauty that expresses
best the Divine. The physical world is the world of form and
the perfection of form is beauty. Beauty interprets, expresses,
manifests the Eternal. Its role is to put all manifested nature
in contact with the Eternal through the perfection of form,
through harmony and a sense of the ideal which uplifts and
        leads towards something higher.

In the world of forms a violation of Beauty is as great a fault
as a violation of Truth in the world of ideas. For Beauty is the
        worship Nature offers to the supreme Master of the universe;
Beauty is the divine language in forms. And a consciousness
of the Divine which is not translated externally by an under-
standing and expression of Beauty would be an incomplete
        consciousness.
But true Beauty is as difficult to discover, to understand
and above all to live as any other expression of the Divine; this
discovery and expression exacts as much impersonality and re-
nunciation of egoism as that of Truth or Bliss. Pure Beauty is
universal and one must be universal to see and recognise it.
O Lord of Beauty, how many faults I have committed
against Thee, how many do I still commit....Give me the perfect
understanding of Thy Law so that I may not again fail to keep
it. Love would be incomplete without Thee, Thou art one of its
most perfect ornaments, Thou art one of its most harmonious
        smiles. ...
Thou art not at all what a vain people think Thee to be,
Thou art not at all attached exclusively to this or that form of
life: it is possible to awaken Thee and make Thee shine in every
form; but for that one must have discovered Thy secret. ...
O Lord of Beauty, give me the perfect understanding of Thy
Law, so that I may no longer fail to keep it, so that Thou mayst
become in me the harmonious consummation of the Lord of
        Love.

Sweet Mother, what is an aesthetic conscience?

It is the consciousness of beauty. Aesthetic means that which
concerns beauty, art. There are people, for example, who move
around in life and see landscapes, see people and things and
have absolutely no sense of whether it is beautiful or not; and
into the bargain, it makes no difference at all to them. They
look at the sky, see whether there are any clouds, whether it
will rain or be clear, for instance; or whether the sun is hot or
the wind cold. But there are others — when they raise their eyes
and look at a beautiful sky, it gives them pleasure, they say,
“Oh! It is fine today, the sunrise is lovely today, the sunset is
beautiful, the clouds have fine shapes. So, the first kind do not
have an aesthetic conscience, the second have.

Let beauty be your constant ideal.
        The beauty of the soul
        The beauty of sentiments
        The beauty of thoughts
        The beauty of the action
        The beauty in the work
so that nothing comes out of your hands which is not an ex-
pression of pure and harmonious beauty.
And the Divine Help shall always be with you.

Beauty is not the same as Delight, but like love it is an expres-
sion, a form of Ananda, — created by Ananda and composed of
Ananda; it conveys to the mind that delight of which it is made.
Aesthetically the delight takes the appearance of Rasa and the
enjoyment of this Rasa is the mind’s and the vital’s reaction to
the perception of beauty. The spiritual realisation has a sight, a
perception, a feeling which is not that of the mind and vital, —
it passes beyond the aesthetic limit, sees the universal beauty,
sees behind the object what the eye cannot see, feels what the
emotion of the heart cannot feel and passes beyond Rasa and
Bhoga to pure Ananda, — a thing more deep, intense, raptur-
ous than any mental or vital or any physical Rasa reaction can
be. It sees the One everywhere, the original bliss of existence
everywhere, and all these can create an inexpressible Ananda of
beauty, — the beauty of the One, the beauty of the Divine, the
beauty of the Beloved, the beauty of the eternal Existence in
things. It can see also the beauty of forms and objects, but with
a seeing other than the mind’s, other than that of a limited
physical vision, — what was not beautiful to the eye becomes
beautiful, what was beautiful to the eye wears now a greater,
marvellous and ineffable beauty. The spiritual realisation can
bring the vision and the rapture of All-Beautiful everywhere.

... instil into the being this instinct, this sense of true beauty,
a supreme beauty which will gradually act on the cells and
make the body capable of expressing beauty. This is still a thing
which is not known: the body is infinitely more plastic than you
believe. You must have surely noticed (perhaps very vaguely)
that those who live in an inner peace, in an inner beauty, a light,
and perfect goodwill, have an expression which is not quite the
same as of people who live in bad thoughts, in the lower part
of their nature. When the human being is at his best, above his
base animality, he reflects something which is not there when
he lives in a state of beastiality.
If one tried to change one’s form out of egoism or that fa-
mous thing, vanity, naturally, one would not succeed, for it is
something deeper which has the power to act; but if one could
refrain from having at all times bad will, wicked thoughts, one
would see a kind of harmony beginning to express itself gradu-
ally in the forms and features, for it is a fact that the body ex-
        presses the inner states.
But you forget one thing. If you have in the whole day five
or six hours of higher consciousness, you feel that it is already
much, and the rest of the time you live more or less like a little
animal, you let yourself go, you are driven by circumstances.
And you forget completely to approach the Thing which is
above, which can prevent you from descending into the lower
        regions of your nature.

… the sense of beauty is the powerful help … to the forma-

The object of existence is not the practice of virtue for its own

... that which we are seeking through beauty is in the end that

The search for beauty is only in its beginning a satisfaction in
the beauty of form, the beauty which appeals to the physical
senses and the vital impressions, impulsions, desires. It is only
in the middle a satisfaction in the beauty of the ideas seized,
the emotions aroused, the perception of perfect process and
harmonious combination. Behind them the soul of beauty in us
desires the contact, the revelation, the uplifting delight of an
absolute beauty in all things which it feels to be present, but
which neither the senses and instincts by themselves can give,
though they may be its channels, — for it is suprasensuous,—

nel, — for it is suprarational, supra-intellectual, — but to which
through all these veils the soul itself seeks to arrive. When it
can get the touch of this universal, absolute beauty, this soul of
beauty, this sense of its revelation in any slightest or greatest
thing, the beauty of a flower, a form, the beauty and power of a
character, an action, an event, a human life, an idea, a stroke of
the brush or the chisel or a scintillation of the mind, the colours
of a sunset or the grandeur of the tempest, it is then that the
sense of beauty in us is really, powerfully, entirely satisfied. It is
in truth seeking, as in religion, for the Divine, the All-Beautiful in
man, in nature, in life, in thought, in art; for God is Beauty and
Delight hidden in the variation of his masks and forms. When,

        love and harmony.

A harmonious collective aspiration can change the course of
        circumstances.

Surely we must always want peace and harmony and work for
it as much as we can — but for that the best field of action is
        always within ourselves.

Look for the inner cause of disharmony much more than the
outer ones. It is the inside which governs the outside.

You must rise so high in your consciousness that it dominates

It seems to me that this happens quite often — much more
often than one might think. For example, each time an illness
is cured, each time an accident is avoided, each time a catas-
trophe, even a terrestrial catastrophe, is averted, in all these
things, it is always an intervention of the vibration of harmony
in the vibration of disorder that causes the disorder to cease.
So the people, the faithful, who always say, “By the grace
of God, this has happened,” are not so wrong.
I am simply observing a fact, that this vibration of order
and harmony intervenes — the causes of its intervention have
nothing to do with it, it is merely a scientific observation — and
I have experienced this quite a number of times.
                                                        CWM 10: 190

For example, take someone who was sick or in pain; when Sri
Aurobindo was in possession of this supramental power... he
would apply this Will, for example, to some disorder, either
physical or vital or, of course, mental — he would apply this
force of greater harmony, of greater order, this supramental
force, and focus it there, and it would act immediately. And it
was an order: it created an order, a harmony greater than the
natural harmony. That is, if it was a case of healing, for example,
the healing would be more perfect and more complete than
any obtained by ordinary physical and mental methods.

Usually, in ordinary life, there are people who, due to their very
constitution, the way they are made, are in a certain harmony
with Nature, as though they breathed with the same rhythm,
and these people are usually always joyful, happy; they succeed
in all they do, they avoid many troubles and catastrophes, in-
deed they are in harmony with the rhythm of life and Nature.
And, moreover, there are days when one is in contact with the
divine Consciousness which is at work, with the Grace, and
then everything is tinged, coloured with this Presence, and
things which usually seem to you dull and uninteresting be-
come charming, pleasant, attractive, instructive — everything
lives and vibrates, and is full of promise and force. So, when
one opens to that, one feels stronger, freer, happier, full of
energy, and everything has a meaning. One understands why
things are as they are and one participates in the general move-
        ment. . . .
Now, if one is able to consciously unite with one’s psychic
being, one can always be in this state of receptivity, inner joy,
energy, progress, communion with the divine Presence. And
when one is in communion with That, one sees it everywhere,
in everything, and all things take on their true meaning.
On what does that depend?...On an inner rhythm. Perhaps

For each activity, each realisation, each movement, there is a
definite period of time, which differs. There are countless peri-
ods of time which are entangled; but each thing is regulated by
a kind of rhythm which is this thing’s own rhythm.
You see, for the facility of their outer existence, men have
divided time more or less arbitrarily into years, months, weeks,
days, hours, minutes, seconds, etc.; it is a rhythm that’s more
or less arbitrary, because it has been created by man, but it
has in itself a certain reality, for it corresponds to universal
movements... as far as possible. And that is why, by the way,
we celebrate the birthday, for example: because there is a cer-
tain rhythm in each one’s existence which is established by this
regular return of circumstances analogous to those in which
        he was born.
And all movements — when you observe them, you become
aware that they have a certain rhythm. . .
And all this, each thing having its own rhythm, well, it

Harmony is the natural rule of the Spirit, it is the inherent law

For all problems of existence are essentially problems of
harmony. They arise from the perception of an unsolved dis-

To rest content with an unsolved discord is possible for the
practical and more animal part of man, but impossible for his

It has been seen that in repose, in nivritti, in udasinata, perfect
peace and ananda are possible; but the thing the Yoga has set
out to establish is the perfect harmony of Nivritti & Pravritti, of
desirelessness & Lipsa, of Guna & Nirguna, complete Ananda,
Tapas, Knowledge, Love, Power & Infinite Egoless Being, con-
summating in the full and vehement flow of the Pravritti. By
the fulfilment or failure of this harmony the Yoga stands or falls.
                                                     CWSA 10: 173-74

In all of them there is a truth that can harmonise with the true
truth of the others. For there is a truth in Nirvana — Nirvana is
nothing but the peace and freedom of the Spirit which can ex-
ist in itself, be there world or no world, world-order or world-dis-
order. Bhakti and the heart's call for the Divine have a truth — it
is the truth of the divine Love and Ananda. The will for Tapasya
has in it a truth — it is the truth of the Spirit's mastery over
its members. The musician and poet stand for a truth, it is the
truth of the expression of the Spirit through beauty. There is a
truth behind the mental affirmer; even there is a truth behind
the mental doubter, the Russellian, though far behind him —
the truth of the denial of false forms. Even behind the two vital
personalities there is a truth, the truth of the possession of the
inner and outer worlds not by the ego but by the Divine. That is
the harmonisation for which our yoga stands — but it cannot be
achieved by any outward arrangement, it can only be achieved
by going inside and looking, willing and acting from the psychic
and from the spiritual centre. For the truth of the being is there
and the secret of Harmony also is there. CWSA 29: 456-57

imposes a certain, a considerable mentalised harmony, cannot
integrate the whole being and nature. These harmonisations
by an inferior control are, besides, inconclusive, because it is
one part of the nature which dominates and fulfils itself while
the others are coerced and denied their fullness. They can be
steps on the way, but not final; therefore in most men there
is no such sole dominance and effected partial harmony, but
only a predominance and for the rest an unstable equilibrium
of a personality half formed, half in formation, sometimes a dis-
equilibrium or unbalance due to the lack of a central govern-
ment or the disturbance of a formerly achieved partial poise.
All must be transitional until a first, though not a final, true
harmonisation is achieved by finding our real centre. For the
true central being is the soul, but this being stands back and in
most human natures is only the secret witness or, one might
say, a constitutional ruler who allows his ministers to rule for
him, delegates to them his empire, silently assents to their de-
cisions and only now and then puts in a word which they can
at any moment override and act otherwise. But this is so long
as the soul-personality put forward by the psychic entity is not
yet sufficiently developed; when this is strong enough for the
inner entity to impose itself through it, then the soul can come
forward and control the nature. It is by the coming forward of
this true monarch and his taking up of the reins of government
that there can take place a real harmonisation of our being and
        our life.

(Mother’s reply to a sadhak who complained to her

I find fault with nobody! and never take sides. But, my way of
seeing is somewhat different. For my consciousness the whole
life upon earth, including the human life and all its mentality, is
a mass of vibrations, mostly vibrations of falsehood, ignorance
and disorder, in which are more and more at work vibrations of
Truth and Harmony coming from the higher regions and push-
ing their way through the resistance.
In this vision, the ego-sense and the individual assertion
and separateness become quite unreal and illusory.
When some extra confusion is created in the already exist-
ing confusion, I direct upon it some special vibrations to restore
as much as possible a better harmony. It is not the individuals
as such that feel the “blow”, it is their clinging to or siding
        with the disharmony.
To say the truth, I was confident that you would instinctive-
ly side with the Truth and understand that in such cases there
is never one side right and one side wrong, but all are to blame
in the measure of their adhesion to falsehood and confusion.

As for the idea that things are not in their place, I understood
it even when I was a child. It was only later that I was given the
explanation by the person who taught me occultism. . . And he
said that... this universe represented equilibrium, not static but
progressive equilibrium, that is to say, each thing in its place,
exactly, each vibration, each movement in its place. The further
down one goes, the more each form, each activity, each thing
is exactly in its place in relation to the whole.
... Sri Aurobindo said the same thing, that nothing is bad, it
is just that things are not in their place — their place not only
in space but also in time; their place in the universe, beginning
with the worlds, the stars, etc., each thing exactly in its place.
And so, when each thing is exactly in its place, from the most
stupendous to the most microscopic, the whole will express
the Supreme progressively... On this Sri Aurobindo based the
fact that in this creation, in this universe, the perfection of
a divine world — what Sri Aurobindo calls the Supermind —
will be able to manifest. Equilibrium is the essential law of this
creation and this is why perfection can be realised in the mani-

“Harmony and beauty of the mind and soul, harmony and beau-
ty of the thoughts and feelings, harmony and beauty in every
outward act and movement, harmony and beauty of the life and

                                      — Sri Aurobindo, The Mother, p. 31

When the surroundings, circumstances, atmosphere, the way
of living and above all the inner attitude are altogether of a
low kind, vulgar, gross, egoistic, sordid, love is reluctant to
come, that is, it always hesitates to manifest itself and gener-
ally does not stay long. A home of beauty must be given for
Beauty to stay. I am not speaking of external things — real
house, real furniture and all that — am speaking of an inner at-
titude, of something within which is beautiful, noble, harmo-
nious, unselfish. There Love has a chance to come and stay.
But when, as soon as it tries to manifest, it is immediately
mixed with such low and ugly things, it does not remain, it
goes away. This is what Sri Aurobindo says: it is “reluctant to
be born” — it could be said that it immediately regrets being
born. Men always complain that love does not stay with them
but it is entirely their fault. They give this love such a sordid life,
mixed with a heap of horrors and such vulgarity, things so base,
so selfish, so dirty, that the poor thing cannot stay. If they don’t
succeed in killing it altogether, they make it utterly sick. So the
only thing it can do is to take flight. People always complain
that love is impermanent and passing. To tell the truth, they

Q: Sri Aurobindo says here about Mahalakshmi: All that is
              poor...repels her advent” ?

Yes, poor, without generosity, without ardour, without ampli-
tude, without inner richness; all that is dry, cold, coiled up,
prevents the coming of Mahalakshmi. It is not a question of
big money, you know! An extremely rich man may be terribly
poor from Mahalakshmi’s point of view. And a very poor man
may be very rich if his heart is generous. ...
A poor man is a man having no qualities, no force, no
strength, no generosity. He is also a miserable, unhappy man.
Moreover, one is unhappy only when one is not generous—if
one has a generous nature which gives of itself without reck-
oning, one is never unhappy. It is those who are coiled up
on themselves and who always want to draw things towards
themselves, who see things and the world only through them-
selves—it is these who are unhappy. But when one gives oneself
generously, without reckoning, one is never unhappy, never. It
is he who wants to take who is unhappy; he who gives himself
        is never so.

Money is the visible sign of a universal force, and this force in its
manifestation on earth works on the vital and physical planes and
is indispensable to the fullness of the outer life. In its origin and
its true action it belongs to the Divine. But like other powers of
the Divine it is delegated here and in the ignorance of the lower
Nature can be usurped for the uses of the ego or held by Asuric
influences and perverted to their purpose. …The seekers or keep-
        ers of wealth are more often possessed rather than its possessors;
few escape entirely a certain distorting influence stamped on it by
its long seizure and perversion by the Asura. For this reason most
spiritual disciplines insist on a complete self-control, detachment
and renunciation of all bondage to wealth and of all personal and
egoistic desire for its possession. Some even put a ban on money
and riches and proclaim poverty and bareness of life as the only
spiritual condition. But this is an error; it leaves the power in the
hands of the hostile forces. To reconquer it for the Divine to whom
it belongs and use it divinely for the divine life is the supramental
        way for the Sadhaka.
You must neither turn with an ascetic shrinking from the
money power, the means it gives and the objects it brings, nor
cherish a rajasic attachment to them or a spirit of enslaving self-
indulgence in their gratifications. Regard wealth simply as a power
to be won back for the Mother and placed at her service.
All wealth belongs to the Divine and those who hold it are
        trustees, not possessors.

thing which can serve to produce, to organise. It is a convenient
means, because in fact it is only a means of making things circulate
        fully and freely.
This force should be in the hands of those who know how to
make the best possible use of it, that is, as I said at the beginning,
people who have abolished in themselves or in someway or oth-
er got rid of every personal desire and every attachment. To this
should be added a vision vast enough to understand the needs of
the earth, a knowledge complete enough to know how to organise
all these needs and use this force by these means.
If, besides this, these beings have a higher spiritual knowledge,
then they can utilise this force to construct gradually upon the
earth what will be capable of manifesting the divine Power, Force
and Grace. And then this power of money, wealth, this financial
force, of which I just said that it was like a curse, would become a
supreme blessing for the good of all.
For I think that it is the best things which become the worst.
Perhaps the worst also can become the best. Some people also
say that it is the worst men who become the best. I hope the best
don’t become the worst, for that indeed would be sad.
But still, certainly, the greatest power, if badly used, can be
a very great calamity; whereas this same very great power if well
utilised can be a blessing. All depends on the use that’s made of
        things. Each thing in the world has its place, its work, a real use;
and if used for something else it creates a disorder, confusion,
chaos. And that’s because in the world as it is, very few things are
utilised for their true work, very few things are really in their place,
and it is because the world is in a frightful chaos that there is all this
misery and suffering. If each thing was in its place, in a harmonious
balance, the whole world could progress without needing to be in
the state of misery and suffering in which it is.
